Engineering leader and Principal Engineer with 23+ years building, scaling and operating large-scale distributed systems, payments platforms, SRE organisations and AI/ML infrastructure across Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Booking.com, Deliveroo and startups. My work has spanned SQL Server internals, Halo 4 multiplayer/networking, Amazon marketplace and vendor data pipelines, Booking.com growth platforms, Deliveroo observability/DBRE, and Google LLM infrastructure supporting products such as Gemini, Bard, YouTube, Search and Ads. I have led systems handling billions of requests per day, re-architected global ingestion pipelines, improved throughput by 3000x, reduced data freshness from 24h to 1h, cut infrastructure OpEx by millions per year, and led reliability work against 99.99%+ availability targets, created initiatives that served more than 16K full time employees and initiated projects that saved billions of dollars per year. I am strongest in high-ambiguity environments where the problem is not just “write software”, but work out what should be built, why it matters, what trade-offs are acceptable, how the organisation needs to operate, and how to create durable mechanisms rather than heroic one-off fixes.
